ShoreTel's Unified Communications for the iPad Applauded by IDC ...

By: Jack McCarthy, Content Manager

Analysts at IDC?s Directions 2013 conference this week termed ShoreTel?s Mobility 6.0 for the iPad and ShoreTel Conferencing for iOS releases as timely initiatives allowing workers following the BYOD trend to use devices they prefer to become more productive at work.

The conference, held Tuesday in Santa Clara, Calif., attracted business executives, investors and analysts to examine what IDC termed the ?3rd Platform? of technologies built on mobile devices and apps, cloud services, mobile broadband networks, big data analytics and social technologies.

ShoreTel Mobility 6.0, which allows multi-modal communications on a native Apple iPad user interface, and ShoreTel Conferencing for iOS, which lets users take advantage of application collaboration capabilities to extend the communications experience, fits in with these technology developments.

Stephen Drake, IDC?s program vice president for mobility and telecom research, said that by enabling ?the iPad to be used as a unified communication endpoint, employees will be able to take advantage of a preferred device to leverage tasks like VoIP/Telephony, Instant Messaging, Presence status and location to greater advantage.

?It?s interesting to lets users access a display where they can collaborate on multiple tasks, so that the iPad becomes almost a mobile PBX,? Drake said. ?Giving end users the ability to perform multiple tasks on a tablet is a really good idea.?

Apple iPads are already penetrating the enterprise at a rapid pace, so ShoreTel Mobility 6.0 and ShoreTel Conferencing for iOs are a natural extension of this trend, said John Jackson, IDC?s research vice president for mobility and connected platforms.

?To me, it makes all the sense in the world (for ShoreTel) to pursue this track,? Jackson said.
