(AP) ? In a steaming, stuffy classroom downtown, it was time for some talented youngsters to face the music.

Half a dozen high school students from across the country were being critiqued on their singing and performance skills by a coach helping them prepare for the National High School Musical Theater Awards on Monday night.

One student from California was warned to perform "I Believe" from "The Book of Mormon" without an ounce of smirk. A teen from Utah was advised not to overthink a Stephen Sondheim lyric. And when a Colorado student wanted advice on whether she was better off singing a serious song from "Aida" or a funny one from "Cinderella," she was asked to sing both. The funny one came out on top.

"That's the one," said the coach, Tony Award-nominee Liz Callaway, whose Broadway credits include "Miss Saigon" and "Baby." The student, Nicole Seefried, seemed convinced ? and relieved. "It is," she said, happily.

The teens were among 62 hoping to be crowned top actor and top actress at this year's contest. Now in its fifth year, the National High School Musical Theater Awards will be held Monday at the Minskoff Theatre, the long-term home of "The Lion King."

The 62 teens who made it to New York ? 31 girls and 31 boys ? get a five-day theatrical boot camp at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, complete with scrambling to learn an opening and closing group number, intense advice on their solo songs, plus a field trip to watch "Annie" on Broadway and dinner at famed theater-district hangout Sardi's. It's not all glamorous, though. Hours are spent in plain classrooms on plastic chairs, with battered pianos and bottles of water.

"It's an experience that's going to stay with them for the rest of their lives," said Van Kaplan, president of the awards organization and the show's director.

Both top winners will receive a scholarship award, capping a monthslong winnowing process that began with 50,000 students from 1,000 schools. This year's contestants come from 20 states: Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Illinois, Texas, Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, California, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Nevada, Utah, Wisconsin, Tennessee, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Florida and Kansas.

On Monday night, all 62 will perform snippets of the songs that they sung at regional competitions as part of several large medleys, and then six finalists ? three boys and three girls ? will be plucked to sing solos. The winners will be picked from the last six.

Kyle Selig, 20, of Long Beach, Calif., won the best actor award in 2010 and is now a student at Carnegie Mellon University. He returned to help out this year and managed to cram in a few auditions to Broadway shows, including "The Book of Mormon."

"It was a validation of what I should be doing," he said of his win.

In addition to Callaway, the tutors included theater pros Leslie Odom Jr., Michael McElroy and Telly Leung. The judges on Monday will include Tony-winning director Scott Ellis, Tony nominee Montego Glover and casting professional Bernie Telsey. The hosts will be Laura Osnes and Santino Fontana, who co-star in "Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella."

Nicknamed the Jimmy Awards after theater owner James Nederlander, whose company is a co-sponsor of the ceremony, the awards spotlight a high level of talent and maturity for children ages 14 to 18. Performances can range from "Bye Bye Birdie" to "Legally Blonde" to "Sweeney Todd."

The number of programs sending students grows each year ? it started with 16 and now stands at 31 ? and Kaplan says interest has been fueled by TV shows like "Glee" and "Smash."

The competition has also apparently reversed the trend away from arts funding for many regions. "Where usually arts programs are the very first things that get cut, we're seeing school districts invest in the arts because of programs like this," Kaplan says.

The Jimmy Awards had a profound effect on Stephen Mark, 21, of Norwich, Conn. He was a junior intent on studying computer science in college when he became the competition's first male winner in 2009.

The victory convinced him and his family that he should follow his heart into the performing arts. He is now studying musical theater at New York University. "It actually completely changed my life," he says.

SAN FRANCISCO ? Child rights advocates tried to convince a U.S. judge on Friday that a Facebook legal settlement did not go far enough to keep content created by minors out of the hands of advertisers.

Five plaintiffs filed a proposed class action against Facebook in 2011, saying the social networking giant's "Sponsored Stories" program shared user's "likes" of certain advertisers without paying them or allowing them to opt out.

The case has highlighted tension between privacy concerns and Facebook's drive to monetize user content.

Under the terms of a proposed settlement, Facebook will pay $20 million to compensate class members, and promised to give users more control over how their content is shared ? changes which plaintiff lawyers estimate to be worth up to $145 million. Facebook charged advertisers nearly $234 million for Sponsored Stories between January 2011 and August 2012, court filings show.

U.S. District Judge Richard Seeborg in San Francisco preliminarily approved the settlement last year, but he still must give it a final sign-off."

At a hearing on Friday, Children's Advocacy Institute attorney Robert Fellmeth told Seeborg that no minors should have their content shared with advertisers. Seeborg did not say how he would rule, but said his role is only to say if the settlement is fair.

"My function here is not to craft the perfect policy for minors," Seeborg said.

Related story: Facebook to pull ads from pages with sex, violence

Earlier this month, Facebook announced a retooling of its advertising product offerings and eliminated the term "Sponsored Stories," though the company can still share its members likes of different products. Facebook attorney Michael Rhodes said in court on Friday that the legal settlement would still cover those types of advertising practices.

Under the deal, impacted Facebook users can claim a cash payment of around $10 each to be paid from the settlement fund, and plaintiff lawyers are seeking $7.5 million in fees. Any money remaining would then go to charity.

Seeborg called the $145 million valuation of changes to Facebook's site "highly speculative." However, plaintiff lawyer Robert Arns said the changes were very significant. "We think it sets a new standard for all social media sites in the U.S.," Arns said.

The case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California is Angel Fraley et al., individually and on behalf of all others similarly situated vs. Facebook Inc, 11-cv-1726.

FCC to auction two pieces of 1,900MHz spectrum for mobile broadband

FCC votes to auction slice of 1,900MHz band for mobile data

The FCC may be most concerned with portioning out lower frequencies to bandwidth-hungry carriers, but it's devoting some attention to higher bands today. The agency has voted in favor of auctioning off two slices of 1,900MHz spectrum, the lower H block (1,915MHz to 1,920MHz) and upper H block (1,995MHz to 2,000MHz), for the sake of mobile broadband. Both are relatively close to Sprint's PCS airwaves, but the provider reportedly has nothing to fear when rules are in place to minimize interference. If all goes well, an auction could take place in late 2013 or early 2014 -- just soon enough to deliver a quick capacity boost ahead of larger spectrum wars.

Senate Republicans warn NFL, other leagues about Obamacare

By David Morgan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell is urging the National Football League and other professional sports leagues not to support President Barack Obama's healthcare reform law, calling Obamacare divisive and unpopular.

In a June 27 letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, McConnell and fellow Republican Senator John Cornyn accused the Obama administration of drawing the league into "one of the most divisive and polarizing issues of our day" by trying to enlist its help in promoting subsidized health coverage for millions of uninsured Americans.

"Given the divisiveness and persistent unpopularity of the health care law, it is difficult to understand why an organization like yours would risk damaging its inclusive and apolitical brand by lending its name to its promotion," McConnell and Cornyn told the NFL.

The two lawmakers also sent similar letters to Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, the Professional Golfers' Association and the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, or NASCAR.

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told reporters on Monday that the administration was in discussions with the NFL and other sports groups.

"The NFL, for instance, in the conversations I've had, has been very actively and enthusiastically engaged because they see health promotion as one of the things that is good for them and good for the country," she said.

But the league's response to McConnell seemed less than enthusiastic.

"We have responded to the letters we received from members of Congress to inform them we currently have no plans to engage in this area and have had no substantive contact with the administration about (the law's) implementation," said NFL spokesman Greg Aiello.

The Department of Health and Human Services declined to comment.

The White House and HHS are reaching out to professional sports leagues, teams and players in hopes of encouraging young men and women to sign up for health coverage through new online markets that are slated to begin open enrollment on October 1.

McConnell's letters represent a new line of Republican attack on Obama's Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare. Republicans in the House of Representatives have voted 37 times to repeal or defund the law, which they see as a costly and unnecessary expansion of government.

The party is now taking aim at administration efforts to rally private sector support, including fundraising by Sebelius on behalf of the non-profit group Enroll America, which is helping to lead a private-sector grassroots campaign aimed at driving enrollment.

Democrats and other reform advocates say Republicans are trying to undermine the law's implementation ahead of the 2014 congressional elections, in which the party hopes to win control of the Senate.

Analysts say the ability of the online marketplaces, or exchanges, to attract younger beneficiaries will help determine whether Obama's signature domestic policy achievement becomes a success or a failure.

Publisher cancels multibook Paula Deen contract

Paula Deen's publisher has canceled a deal with her for multiple books, including an upcoming cookbook that was the No. 1 seller on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com, following her admission she used a racial slur.

Ballantine Books announced Friday it would not release "Paula Deen's New Testament: 250 Favorite Recipes, All Lightened Up," which was scheduled for October and was the first of a five-book deal announced early last year. Interest in it had surged as Deen, who grew up in Albany, Ga., and specializes in Southern comfort food, came under increasing attack for acknowledging she had used the N-word.

Ballantine, an imprint of Random House Inc., said it had decided to cancel the book's publication after "careful consideration." It had no comment beyond what was in its brief statement, spokesman Stuart Applebaum said.

Later Friday, Deen's literary agent, Janis Donnaud, said that the entire deal had been called off.

"I am confident that these books will be published and that we will have a new publisher," said Donnaud, who declined to comment on whether she had heard from other publishers.

The trouble for Deen started when comments she made in a court deposition became public. During the deposition in a discrimination lawsuit filed by an ex-employee, Deen admitted using the N-word in the past but denied using it to describe waiters.

Deen said she's not a racist during a tearful "Today" show interview but has lost many of her business relationships. Sears Holdings Corp. and J.C. Penney Co. said Friday that they were cutting ties with Deen following similar announcements from Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Target Corp. and Home Depot.

Last week, the Food Network said that it would not renew her contract. She also was dropped by Smithfield Foods, Caesars Entertainment stripped her name from restaurants and drug company Novo Nordisk said it was suspending its work with her.

Publishers have pulled a wide range of books over the years, usually because of plagiarism, fabrications or other issues with the books themselves. Ballantine's decision highlights a problem for Deen even when the product itself has not been challenged and is in high demand.

Some outlets that might have sold her books, such as Target and Wal-Mart, have cut ties with her. Other stores likely would have been reluctant to promote her new book or to invite her for personal appearances.

Because "Paula Deen's New Testament" was months away from release, no copies had been printed. All purchases had been pre-orders, so refunds aren't necessary.

Another Cheap Way for Kitchen Cabinet Doors & Cabinets | BBCWire

If you are remodeling your kitchen, money can be saved by buying cheap stock cabinets rather than replacing them with more expensive custom styles.

Planning Remodel

When you are planning any type of kitchen overhaul deciding what to do with the kitchen cabinet doors is always a major decision to make.

New cabinets often cost up to 50% of your entire remodeling budget and having cabinets that are functional can mean the difference between a kitchen that works and one that doesn?t.

Replacing Only Cabinet Doors

How about just replacing or refinishing the kitchen cabinet doors ? especially if the entire cabinets are in fairly good shape? If you can?t afford to buy all new cabinets this might be the way to go.

Stock, Custom and Semi-Stock

Finding kitchen cabinets that are cheap but don?t look cheap or have kitchen cabinet doors that don?t look cheap can be a real challenge but it is not impossible. Most remodeling specialists agree that cabinets take out a big hunk of your budget for the kitchen. Less money but still a fabulous look!

Cabinets and kitchen cabinet doors on a budget usually come in 3 types: stock, custom and semi-stock. In each of the types, there are variables of drawer quality, construction, wood type and finish. This is one way that you might be able to discover high value even in the less expensive stock cabinets. You only have to know what you are looking for.

Stock Cabinets

For stock cabinets and kitchen cabinet doors ? they are normally in almost any home improvement outlet and in many decorating styles than ever. These usually do not have to be ordered but are in stock at the store. Stock cabinets and kitchen cabinet doors are normally 34 and a half inches high and 24.5 inches deep. Wall or upper cabinets come 30 inches high and 12 inches deep.

To find the value you should wait until there are seasonal sales for discounts on stock. You can add crown molding to customize and this will create a look that is high-end.

Semi-Stock Cabinets

Semi-stock cabinets and kitchen cabinet doors can be ordered at your home improvement center through a kitchen designer. Usually they will be delivered in about a month, so you need to plan ahead with your project. These come in the same standard size as stock cabinets but with the option of being able to increase the width by 3 inch increments. Any old size space may be covered with a filler piece so that it blends with the remaining cabinets. They have solid kitchen cabinet doors and normally make of higher-quality plywood side construction. In addition customizable pieces such as pantries, plate racks, and spice racks can be ordered.

To find a value with these cabinets choose construction of drawers that is solid wood and more solid slides for longer cabinet life. The thicker the plywood of the side construction, the better value is the cabinet and the kitchen cabinet doors.

This is the cheapest way to go ? cabinet and kitchen cabinet doors that are in stock and already in inventory.

This is an article that tells about another way to remodel your kitchen cabinets and save. For further information check with Acme Cabinet Doors!

Researchers Discover Species-Recognition System in Fruit Flies

June 27, 2013 ? A team led by UC San Francisco researchers has discovered a sensory system in the foreleg of the fruit fly that tells male flies whether a potential mate is from a different species. The work addresses a central problem in evolution that is poorly understood: how animals of one species know not to mate with animals of other species.

For the common fruit fly D. melanogaster, the answer lies in the chemoreceptor Gr32a, located on sensory neurons on the male fly's foreleg. "In nature, this sensory system would prevent the creation of hybrids that may not survive or cannot propagate, thereby helping the species preserve its identity," said senior author Nirao M. Shah, MD, PhD, a UCSF associate professor of anatomy.

The work is reported in a paper published online in Cell on June 27, 2013.

Before mating, the researchers found, the male approaches a prospective female and taps her repeatedly on the side with his foreleg. "As he does so, he is using Gr32a to detect, or actually taste, unpleasant-tasting waxy chemicals on the cuticle, or outer skin, of individuals of other species, said co-author Devanand S. Manoli, MD, PhD, a UCSF postdoctoral fellow in anatomy and fellow in child and adolescent psychiatry. "If the prospective mate is not of the same species, and Gr32a is activated, the mating ritual stops right there, even if the male has never encountered a female of another species before."

The researchers also found that if the male fly's Gr32a neurons are activated directly, courtship with other species can be suppressed in these male flies. "These and other findings show that Gr32a neurons are both necessary, in terms of having this taste receptor, and sufficient, in terms of their activity, to prevent males from courting females of other species," said Manoli.

Remarkably, said Shah, Gr32a mediates the rejection of a large range of fruit fly species that last shared a common ancestor with D. melanogaster two to 40 million years ago.

"Indeed, D. melanogaster males lacking Gr32a will attempt to mate with fruit flies of other species even if these species are two to three times larger and look different to the untrained human eye," Shah said. "Of course, these other species reject such mating attempts."

Likewise, when the section of the foreleg with Gr32a neurons is surgically removed, said Manoli, the male will court females of other species. "We also observe this behavior when we remove the forelegs of males in species that are closely related to D. melanogaster," he said, "but not in D. virilis, which is a more distantly related species. It's possible that D. virilis is using a different mechanism to distinguish other species -- we don't know yet."

Another discovery in D. melanogaster, said Shah, is that neurons in the fly's brain, expressing male-specific versions of the gene known as fruitless, "seem to connect up with these Gr32-sensing neurons on the foreleg. So we've begun to delineate not only the sensory pathway but also the central components of the neural circuit that is activated when the male encounters an animal from another species."

Interestingly, said Shah, males use a mechanism that is "similar, but not identical," to inhibit the courting of other males of the same species. "That system involves additional chemoreceptors and neural pathways, which makes sense," he said, "since if you're a male, other males of your own species might be competing with you for food, territory and mates, and so you would be identifying them for different reasons, in different circumstances."

The scientists were surprised to discover that although a D. melanogaster female has neurons that express Gr32a, she does not use them to reject males of other species. "This does make intuitive sense," said Shah. "Males and females have evolved different systems for rejecting potential mates from other species because they have different biological needs for reproduction. Females invest far more energy in generating offspring -- laying eggs, for example, or in mammals, carrying young in the womb. Males generate sperm in large numbers, which is not as energetically expensive."

Manoli noted that other animals may have equivalent mechanisms for distinguishing members of other species, "but these are going to be specific to the ecological niches of those species -- that is, how they function in their environments. Rodents, for example, like flies, primarily use smell to find mates and food, and avoid predators. Some species of fish use electrical impulses. Many primates, including humans, rely on visual and auditory cues."

Yeast are known to use chemosensory mechanisms to not initiate sexual modes of reproduction with other yeast species, said Shah, who cited pioneering research in yeast done by UCSF faculty, including David Julius, PhD and the late Ira Herskowitz, PhD.

For Shah and his team, the next step is to investigate whether other fruit fly species also use Gr32a to tell other species from their own. "We want to see if this system is conserved across related species," he said.

Co-authors of the study are Pu Fan and Osama M. Ahmed of UCSF; Yi Chen of Howard Hughes Medical Institute, UCLA; Neha Agarwal, Sara Kwong, Allen G. Cai, Jeffrey Neitz, PhD, and Adam Renslo, PhD, of UCSF; and Bruce S. Baker, PhD, of HHMI Janelia Farm Research Campus, Ashburn, VA.

Microsoft 'approaching' 100,000 apps in the Windows Store, boasts app downloads in the 'hundreds of millions'

Companies love milestones nearly as much as bees love honey, so it doesn't come as much of a surprise that Microsoft would take advantage of Build 2013 to announce as much positive news as it possibly can. This time, MS head Steve Ballmer has revealed to us that he expects the Windows Store to hit the 100,000 mark (in terms of total apps) sometime this month. Sounds about right if you monitor services like MetroStore Scanner to get a good feel for the OS's progress: it lists over 95,000 apps, which certainly fits the bill.

Additionally, Microsoft also claimed that the very same Windows Store has witnessed app downloads in the vicinity of "hundreds of millions." This vague indicator is not as impressive as it could certainly be if an actual number was attached, but we have a feeling that our friends in Redmond are trying to keep the specifics as hush-hush as possible.

Printable travel game | Simple Mom

A few weeks ago our family hit the road as we made the big move from Alberta, Canada to sunny Arizona. Along with packing, cleaning, and the various tasks that come with a move, I knew I?d also need to prepare for the long drive ahead of us.

With an ample snack assortment, ?a handful of dollar store toys and some favorite movies, I was surprised to find that one of the kids? favorite activities on the trip was a simple ?search and find? game that I?d printed out off the internet.

Printable travel game [SimpleMom.net]

I?ve expanded on the original printout I used and wanted to share this fun little travel game with you in the hopes that it will come in handy on your next family road trip.

sm_travelgame5

You can download the printable game cards to the travel game here. There are four sheets, 48 game cards in total. I printed mine out at home on white cardstock and cut out the cards using a paper trimmer. I added an extra step and used a punch to round the corners of each card but that?s completely optional.sm_travelgame6

Once you?ve printed and cut out your travel game cards, you could have them laminated to make them more durable. The amount of white paper and ink needed to print these is pretty inexpensive, so leaving them as-is is fine, too ? printing out another page or two if they get worn won?t break the bank.

You can store the cards in a ziplock bag or in one of my favorite storage containers for carrying small items like felts, crayons and card games in the car.

sm_travel_game4

What to do with your travel game cards:

? play a family game of ?I Spy?, using the cards as prompts for what to look for

? have each family member draw a card, and the first person to find the item on their card wins

? deal each player five cards, then players search for the items on their cards. As you find an item, draw a new card and continue until all the cards are found

? print out two sets of the game cards and play a game of go fish

? have the whole family work together to find each item in the deck of cards throughout your trip

And for a free printable BINGO version of this fun travel game, please visit my blog.

Our family loves taking road trips together; they can be a lot of fun and a great family bonding experience.

Are you planning a family road trip this summer? Where are you headed? What are some of your family?s favorite things to do in the car for fun?

Supermoon photos: Spectacular moon pics wow stargazers

Supermoon photos: Sunday's full moon coincided with our natural satellite's closest distance from the Earth, making it the biggest full moon of the year.

By Clara Moskowitz,?SPACE.com / June 25, 2013

Experienced space photographers Edwin Aguirre and Imelda Joson created this composite view of the biggest full moon of 2013, a so-called 'supermoon,' from a series of images taken as the full moon rose over downtown Boston on Sunday.

Imelda B. Joson and Edwin L. Aguirre

Enlarge Photos

If you happened to catch the full moon over the weekend, you may have noticed a slightly bigger and brighter display than usual ??a lunar view that captivated skywatchers around the world. Dubbed the "supermoon," Sunday's full moon on June 23 was the largest moon of the year, because the moon's full phase coincided with its arrival at perigee, its closest distance from Earth.

In spots with good weather Sunday night, the moon offered an awesome sight. SPACE.com readers sent in supermoon photos from across the United States, as well as Canada, Guam, Macedonia, Italy, and other far-flung locales.

"Because of the haze, the rising moon exhibited a vivid reddish orange color, similar to that of a deep total lunar eclipse," photographer Edwin Aguirre, who snapped photos of the?supermoon?from Boston, told SPACE.com in an email. "Others thought?it looked like the red planet Mars. The sky cooperated so everyone had a great time." [Photos: Dazzling Supermoon Views for June 2013]

"Dozens of people, young and old, gathered well before dark where we were ? at Robbins Farm Park in Arlington, which overlooks the city skyline," Aguirre wrote. "They brought blankets and lawn chairs ??and their dogs ??to enjoy not only the spectacular view, but also the nice, cool evening breeze, which was a welcome relief from the heat and humidity earlier in the day."In many places, moon watching over the weekend was a big event.

Some celebrated the supermoon in style.

"Took the kids out to see the supermoon near Las Vegas," wrote Tyler S. Leavitt, whose children dressed in capes and spandex for the occasion. "They had so much fun running around as superheroes as the moon rose."

The?supermoon occurs?because the moon's orbit around our planet is not perfectly circular, so sometimes it swings closer than others. When the moon is also full at the time, it creates a vision that's about 12 percent larger in the sky than other full moons.

In addition, when the moon is sighted low on the horizon, behind trees and buildings, the contrast can create an optical illusion that makes the moon seem even bigger.

Heart failure survivors at greater risk for cancer, study shows

June 25, 2013 ? Heart failure patients are surviving more often with the heart condition but they are increasingly more likely to be diagnosed with cancer, a trend that could be attributed to increased surveillance, side effects of treatments, or other causes, according to a study published online today in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

"Heart failure patients are not only at an increased risk for developing cancer, but the occurrence of cancer increases mortality in these patients," explained Dr. Veronique Roger, MD, director of the Mayo Clinic Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery and co-author of the study. "These findings underscore the importance of cancer surveillance in the management of heart failure patients."

Researchers conducted the study using medical records from the Rochester Epidemiology Project, which links the inpatient and outpatient records from all providers used by the population of Olmsted County, Minn. The study included 596 patients with heart failure paired with the same number of similar healthy subjects.

The study looked at two 11-year time periods. Patients diagnosed with heart failure between 1979 and 1990 had a 48 percent increased risk of cancer, while patients diagnosed between 1991 and 2002 had an 86 percent increased risk. Roger and colleagues suggest several possible causes for the increased risk of cancer in heart failure patients, including side effects of cardiovascular treatments, or stress from illness or other mechanisms associated with the physiology of heart failure such as inflammation.

Investigators stress the importance of the findings in the treatment and management of heart failure, concluding patients should be monitored closely for signs of cancer.

"These findings also illustrate the importance of multi-morbidity among patients living with chronic diseases and support the concept of providing holistic rather than disease-based care," the authors said.

Chinese businessman behind $40 billion Nicaragua canal denies special ties

By Lucy Hornby

BEIJING (Reuters) - The mysterious Chinese businessman behind a $40 billion plan to build a canal through Nicaragua pledged transparency on Tuesday -- but refused to reveal where he attended college.

Wang Jing, 40, who says his initial wealth came from a gold mine investment in Cambodia, is the only public face for a project that on paper would challenge the Panama Canal's monopoly on transporting oil, ore and containers between Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico ports and Asian markets.

Nicaragua's Congress last week granted Wang's Cayman Islands-registered HKND company a 50-year concession to develop the canal, following a September agreement with president Daniel Ortega. HKND in turn is a unit of HK Nicaragua Canal Development Investment Co., Ltd, a firm Wang had registered in Hong Kong just a month before the deal with Ortega.

Wang denied any family connection to the Chinese government, military or ruling Communist Party. Connections, or guanxi, are often the hidden ingredient behind sudden success in China.

"I always hoped people would pay attention to the project and not to me personally," he told a news conference at a luxury hotel in central Beijing.

"I am a very normal Chinese citizen. I couldn't be more normal."

The plan - which has generated a lot of skepticism from industry experts - is to build a 286-km (178-mile) canal connecting the Caribbean with the Pacific via Lake Nicaragua, Central America's largest freshwater lake.

It would cost about four years' worth of Nicaragua's annual gross domestic product, and would likely be three times longer than the Panama Canal, which took a decade to build.

Speaking later in an interview with Reuters, Wang said HKND would head a consortium of partners that would operate "fairly, impartially and openly" and might include international firms.

It would be financed by large Chinese and international banks that he declined to name, although he said financing negotiations were going smoothly.

A likely partner is China Railway Construction, one of the country's largest state-owned infrastructure developers, according to HKND materials promoting the project. Another of Wang's companies, the unlisted Xinwei Telecom Enterprise Group, signed a cooperation accord with China Railway earlier this year.

On one point, Wang was explicit - he would maintain at least a 5 percent stake in HKND, and he would remain in charge. He owns 100 percent of HKND.

"Any future partners or consortium will respect my views and opinions very much," he said.

Wang projected annual shipping revenues of $5.5 billion when the canal is at full capacity. The deal calls for construction to be completed in five years, but contains no penalties for delay. Once constructed, ownership of the concession would gradually return to Nicaragua.

The tall, round-faced Wang was unknown when he privatized loss-making state-owned Xinwei in 2010 and transformed it. Xinwei booked over 2 billion yuan ($325.46 million) in profits last year, Chinese media reported, mostly building wireless networks in other countries.

Xinwei's website carries photographs of Xi Jinping, now China's president, and Li Keqiang, now premier, visiting Xinwei.

Wang told journalists he studied traditional Chinese medicine, but added it was "inconvenient" to say at which university. He then took an interest in mining in Southeast Asia, including the Cambodian gold mine, he said.

Wang said he lived in his native Beijing with his mother, younger brother and daughter. Corporate records show a hotel management company registered to Wang and his brother, Wang Peng, as well as other small entertainment and telecommunications companies under their names.

Reuters was not able to locate the hotel management company at its registered address.

Wang's nearly 40 percent stake in Xinwei is worth about $1 billion, based on the asking price for a minority share in the firm currently on sale by state-owned Datang Telecommunications.

What Does 200 Calories Look Like?

The answer to the question of how much can you eat of different foods before you hit 200 calories varies, depending what you're consuming. Two hundred calories is a whole lot of apples, but less than half of a Big Mac. It's a plate full of broccoli, but more like a spoonful of peanut butter. But it's a lot easier to understand what that really means when you actually see the food in front of you in this video from ASAP Science.

Officials mum over probe linked to Pats' Hernandez

NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) ? Authorities continue to investigate, but not talk about, the killing of a semi-pro football player whose body was found a mile from New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez.

A spokeswoman for the Bristol County district attorney's office said Sunday that officials are not releasing details. Spokeswoman Yasmina Serdarevic said officials also are not talking about the cause of death of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, whose body was found on Monday. His death was ruled a homicide.

Hernandez was questioned and his home searched as part of the police investigation into the Dorchester man's death.

State police officers and dogs searched Hernandez's North Attleboro home for more than three hours on Saturday.

An attorney for Hernandez has said he would not comment on the searches.

New England Patriots spokesman Stacey James has said the team does not expect to comment during the police investigation. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was waiting for the legal process to take its course.

The Patriots drafted Hernandez out of Florida in 2010. He has since combined with Rob Gronkowski to form one of the top tight end duos in the NFL. He missed 10 games last season with an ankle injury and had shoulder surgery in April but is expected to be ready for training camp. Last summer, the Patriots gave him a five-year contract worth $40 million.

Israeli chief rabbi suspends self over fraud probe

JERUSALEM (AP) ? One of Israel's two chief rabbis has suspended himself over a police probe into an alleged money laundering scheme.

Yona Metzger's lawyers said Sunday he decided to refrain from carrying out any official roles during the police inquiry. Metzger was questioned last week over fraud and bribery allegations. Police raided his home and office following a months-long undercover investigation into his financial dealings. He denies the allegations.

Metzger is only weeks away from ending his 10-year term as the country's chief rabbi for Israel's Ashkenazi, or European-descended, Jews. Along with a second chief rabbi from the Sephardic, or Middle Eastern lineage, Metzger has led the country's supreme body for overseeing Jewish services.

In 2005, Metzger was also questioned over fraud allegations. No charges were filed.

Real Estate Market Continues to Heat Up - Falls Church Patch

Homes are for sale for shorter periods of time and selling at higher prices in the Washington metro area market.

The spring real estate market has been hot in the DC metro area, with homes selling faster and at higher prices.

According to Real Estate Business Intelligence:

  • The average home is on the market for just 38 days (down from 48 days a year ago).
  • The median sold price of DC area homes has risen more than 8 percent from a year ago.
  • The number of homes on the market in the DC area is up 20.2 percent from a year ago.

The hottest real estate market in the DC metro area right now? Falls Church, where median sales prices were $623,000 recently.

Despite the growth in listings, there isn?t enough inventory to meet demand, both the National Association of Realtors and individual real estate agents are warning.

?Property buyers in DC right now are chasing a market, facing multiple offers, battling price increases that outpace income increases, competing with out-of-area buyers and are operating out of fear of the inevitable interest rate hike,? wrote in a recent blog post in the Huffington Post?s DC Real Estate section. ?Does this remind anyone of 2005? It's like watching the entire city go by in a big circle marked "real estate bubble.?

To put the DC metro area?s market in perspective: Nationwide, sales of existing homes rose in May by 12.9 percent over a year ago?the highest they?ve been since November 2009, NAR data shows.

What?s more?homes are selling quickly: 45 percent of homes sold in May were on the market for less than a month and the average home was on the market for 41 days. (See additional analysis and take-aways here from The Wall Street Journal.)

Sarah Gadon Joins Amazing Spider-Man 2

sarah-gadon-slice

Yesterday, we reported that Shailene Woodley (The Descendants), who was set to play Mary Jane in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, had been cut from the picture because director Marc Webb wanted to ?streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship.?? The character would appear in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, but would likely be recast.? However, a new wrinkle has emerged as the production has possibly cast their new MJ already by hiring Sarah Gadon (Cosmopolis).

Hit the jump for more.? The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in 3D on May 2, 2014. [Update: The actress has taken to Twitter to clear things up: "To all those a twitter, I will not be playing MJ in Spider-Man. I have a role in the film, but it is not that one :) ."]

Last night, ET Canada [via JoBlo] tweeted the following:

?

That?s pretty vague, but it?s possible that the studio wants to lock down an actress to play Mary Jane so the production can hit the ground running on The Amazing Spider-Man 3.? There?s also the disappointing possibility that Webb?s statement was false, and they felt Woodley?s performance wasn?t in line with their vision for the character, so they hired Gadon to play the role.? I personally have no problem with Gadon since I?ve only seen her in Cosmopolis and Antiviral, and she was fine in both if not particularly memorable due to being overshadowed by incredibly unhinged lead characters. Of course, it?s also possible that Gadon isn?t playing Mary Jane at all.

I?m sure this will all be sorted out soon, but it does raise the question of how vital the Mary Jane role is to The Amazing Spider-Man 2.? Is it something that can be excised completely with no harm to the story?? Because when they tried to cut most of the Rajit Ratha (Irrfan Khan) role from The Amazing Spider-Man, it only led to confusion.

Oh No They Didn't! - ///gaming news/// Micro$lop changes Flopbox ...

Microsoft has rolled back a much-criticised requirement that its upcoming Xbox One gaming console be regularly connected to the internet and made clear that there will be no limitations on sharing games.

Microsoft has been criticised for vague statements about whether it will allow?Xbox? One buyers to play secondhand software. Gamers also expressed distaste for a requirement that the console be connected to the internet once every 24 hours.

Don Mattrick, president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment business, said in a blog post Wednesday that an internet connection?will no longer be required to play games on the?Xbox One after its initial setup, and users can share and play games like they have on the?Xbox 360.

Mattrick said the changes are in response to feedback Microsoft received since unveiling plans for the console in May.

"You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you," he wrote. "Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world."

In a shot aimed at Microsoft, rival Sony announced during last week's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles that its upcoming PlayStation 4 will not require a regular internet connection to work and that the company won't try to restrict used game sales.

Both consoles will go on sale later this year, the Xbox One at $599 and the PS4 at $549(these are australian prices).

When Microsoft finally announced its policies regarding Xbox One game-sharing, used game sales and connectivity requirements, gamers were not happy at all. While some people thought Microsoft?s new policies would help usher in the future of console gaming, a much more vocal group found them restrictive and anti-consumer. The?critics?were loud enough that Microsoft ultimately decided to reverse course and cancel all of its controversial plans. Was this the right move? Implications for the Xbox?s future aside, the short-term impact of Microsoft?s decision is already being felt: Just one day after Microsoft announced the removal of DRM and connectivity requirements, pre-sales of the Xbox One jumped ahead of Sony?s PlayStation 4 on Amazon.com.

Since Microsoft and Sony each made their E3 announcements, preorders of both the standard edition PlayStation 4 and the launch bundle have topped Microsoft?s Xbox One on Amazon.com, as ranked by the site?s best-sellers list in the video games category. Now that Microsoft has announced that Xbox One consoles will not need to connect to the Internet once every 24 hours and that games can be shared or resold without restrictions, the Xbox One catapulted above both PS4 bundles and is now the top-selling item in Amazon?s video games category.

Microsoft?s Xbox One will launch this coming November for $499, which includes a limited edition controller and a Kinect sensor.

When Sony announced the PS4 price at E3 last week, the crowd went wild at the shockingly low $400 price tag. What about the PS4 release date, though? Unfortunately, Sony kept mum on that topic, and just stuck with the vague ?Q4 2013? timeframe. Meanwhile, European retailer Media Markt has now supposedly outed the launch date as November 13. Whoops!

This week, a member of NeoGAF posted a photo taken at an Amsterdam Media Markt revealing the release date. Even if this is based on legitimate information, the PS4 might have a staggered roll-out across the world with North America, Europe, and Asia receiving the consoles on different dates. As far as we know, other locations could even see the PS4 launch as early as October. As the battle between Sony and Microsoft heats up, it wouldn?t be surprising to see the PS4 launch as early as Sony can muster.

While the world gears up for next-gen consoles, Sony clearly plans on supporting the current generation for years to come. Kotaku is reporting that two new PS3 models, CECH-4205B and CECH-4205C, have just been filed for certification in South Korea. Don?t assume that means we?ll be seeing a price drop any time soon, though. Fergal Gara of Sony Computer Entertainment UK has gone on record as saying that ?The PlayStation 3 is a system where it hasn?t been particularly easy to get the costs down, and ?there?s no plans as yet? for a price drop.

The PS4 has been selling like hotcakes on Amazon, and now Sony Computer Entertainment of America CEO Jack Tretton is saying that there won?t be enough PS4s to meet demand. The perceived prestige of selling out all of your initial stock on launch day is just too alluring for major companies at this point. It?s unclear if the supply constraint worries are legitimate, or completely fabricated for PR purposes. If I had to guess, it might be a little bit of both ? a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy.

The PS4?s apparent pre-order success comes despite the move towards requiring a yearly $50 PlayStation Plus membership to play online multiplayer games. It?s true that the previously free multiplayer is now behind a pay wall, but the once-premium auto-updating feature will be available for all PS4 owners. As always, video services like Netflix and Hulu Plus won?t require PlayStation Plus either. At $10 less than Xbox Live Gold, this sure seems like a better deal for everyone.
