I'm slowly brewing up a RPG system and setting, but I haven't quite decided how the core mechanic of the game should work. I'm considering using something as simple as the d20 (roll d20, add bonuses, compare to difficulty number) since it fits well with the range of bonuses from various statistics and it helps making the rules simple... well, simpler than a lot of other systems.
But, with simplicity comes mundanity, and I was hoping someone here could inspire me; give me ideas on how to pep up the core mechanic using the d20. The next edition of D&D, for instance, introduces the notion of advantages/disadvantages where a character (if given advantage/disadvantage) will roll 2d20 instead of his regular 1d20. If he has advantage, he or she uses the higher roll. If he has disadvantage, he or she uses the lower roll.
So, any ideas? What have other systems done?
Thanks.
