The rapid improvements in computer technology mean that it has never been more important to erase data safely.
Anja ffrench, director of marketing and communications at Computer Aid, said that while the rate of replacement at the moment is high, the proliferation of smartphones, tablets and other connected devices is only likely to exacerbate the issue of e-waste.
?We?re upgrading all the time and buying the newest devices and changing mobile phones after a year. In the UK, companies are getting rid of computers every three or four years. So it?s growing and it?s growing all over the world,? she explained.
?We need to have solutions in place.?
She suggested that there ought to be an incentive for businesses to reuse equipment to encourage safe data destruction, rather than the current trend to sell it outside the EU.
Her comments come as part of a campaign by Computer Aid to make businesses more accountable for the e-waste they produce.
