Babyproof your dog: Start preparing pets before a newborn comes home
News from Detroit Free Press:

A baby changes everything for a pet ? from how its home looks, smells and sounds to what the rules are.

Low-energy, friendly, social dogs are the most adaptable pets, while excitable, high-maintenance, busybody dogs are the least adaptable, said San Francisco veterinarian and animal behaviorist Sophia Yin.

?Little dogs can be more jealous and more snippy,? said Lynn Sullivan, community health program manager at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center.

?Then, when I came home from the hospital, I went in first, without the baby,? said Mary Brown, 33. ?We had some treats. ?When she was being gentle with him, we would give her a treat.?

When the Browns? second child, Emmett, arrived in March 2011, they did similar things to prepare Maggie.

?One of the LHPA?s roles is to assist landholders control wild dogs on their land, but we also get requests for advice on how to deal with domestic dogs that have strayed onto private property.

?Domestic dogs must be kept under control and supervision at all times. If a dog strays onto a private property and if the occupier believes it will molest or injure livestock, the landholder has the right to destroy the animal (section 22(5) of the Companion Animals Act 1998). If dogs cause injury to an animal the owner of the dog is liable for damages.
