Sony Xperia Z to hit NZ shores in March

Sony's new flagship mobile device, the Sony Xperia Z, will be released in New Zealand in March of this year.

The device runs Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and will be upgradable to 4.2 shortly after launch, Sony said.

The Xperia Z has a 5-inch, full HD display, with Sony's Bravia technology, which is widely used on Sony TVs. There's also quad-core Snapdragon processor, and a 13MP camera that can record HDR video.

The Xperia Z is dust resistant and water resistant. It is protected against jets of water and can be temporarily immersed in water up to 1m deep.

The device features LTE, or '4G' mobile broadband, which is currently being trialled in New Zealand by Telecom. There's no guarantee that the Xperia Z's LTE capabilities will be compatible with New Zealand networks, however.

Sony also said the phone features a 'stamina' mode, which it says can improve standby battery life by shutting down power-sucking apps when the phone is locked.

Sony did not say which carriers would be selling the device, or how much the phone would cost.
