Rare mussels almost 'wiped out'

The largest population in English waters of an endangered species of mollusc has almost been destroyed.

Insect charity Buglife has called for an inquiry after the death of up to 90% of the freshwater pearl mussels at the Ennerdale Water in Cumbria.

It is thought that water levels in the outflow of the lake fell, causing the temperature to go up and oxygen levels to go down.

"This is devastating news," said Buglife chief executive Matt Shardlow.

Meet the mussel:

  • The freshwater pearl mussel is a type of mollusc, of which there are around 85,000 recognised extant species
  • The freshwater pearl mussel can grow up to 15cm long
  • Their larvae resemble tiny mussels with hinged shells that snap shut when they find a suitable juvenile fish to attach themselves to
  • It is thought that the freshwater pearl mussel may once have been the most numerous bivalve mollusc in the world
  • In bivalve molluscs, the gills both "breathe" and produce a water flow through the animal, which is used for both reproduction and excretion

About 80,000 freshwater mussels were lost in this single instance, out of an estimated total population in England and Scotland of about 12m, according to Buglife.

Mr Shardlow compared the loss to wiping out a medium-sized city in the UK, in human terms.

The species is protected under UK and international legislation.

"The UK supports a large proportion of the world population for this species and we have an international responsibility to protect these animals," said Matt Shardlow.

The freshwater pearl mussel recently joined giant pandas and Javan rhinos in a list of the world's 365 "most endangered species", assembled by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) last year.

The species is thought to be one of the longest-living invertebrates in existence ,with individuals surviving for up to 150 years.

"The bloated corpses of animals born when Charles Darwin was alive have been floating out of their beds and (are) being swept into the Irish Sea," said Matt Shardlow.

The mussels take 10-12 years to reach sexual maturity, meaning that it takes time to build up numbers.

"If you get to the point where the river is just uninhabitable, you cause 150 years' worth of damage, and that's what's happened in this instance," said Matt Shardlow.

Matt Shardlow said the pearl mussel had been in "relatively steep decline", in recent years, partly because of poaching and illegal pearl fishing.

But he said it was exacerbated by the mussel's complicated life cycle.

"The larvae come out and they attach to the gills of salmon and trout and live there for a while," said Matt Shardlow.

"They then drop off and they live in gravel in the riverbed and then gradually grow into the big mussels that one recognises as pearl mussels."

It means that changes to fish populations or silt and soil being washed into the river system have negative effects on the species.

Pollutants from agriculture have also affected the species.

"On top of that they've got issues to do with water flow and oxygen availability, which is obviously the problem that they've had here," said Matt Shardlow.

"We must understand the cause of this disaster so that it never happens again," he said.

Water company United Utilities said it had a license to take water from Ennerdale, and also to release water from Ennerdale into the Ehen, with levels for both set by law.

The Environment Agency said that it has been working with United Utilities and Natural England since early June to protect the surviving mussels.

It said it had asked the water company to increase the flow to help the mussels, which it did.

The agency said it was now investigating what could have caused the drop in river levels that lead to the mussel deaths.

Syria talks begin but no letup in violence

GENEVA (Reuters) - International talks on a way to resolve the increasingly bloody conflict in Syria opened in Geneva on Saturday with world powers still in dispute over whether President Bashar al-Assad can have any role in a political transition.

Kofi Annan, the former U.N. chief and the special international envoy on Syria, is hoping for consensus on a plan for a unity government that would exclude controversial figures from leadership - effectively meaning Assad would step down.

However, Moscow, a long-time ally of the Syrian strongman and an opponent of what it sees as foreign meddling in domestic affairs, objects to any solution imposed on Syria from outside.

A senior U.S. official said the talks "remain challenging" and may or may not reach a deal.

"Discussions remain challenging. We're continuing to work on this today, but we need a plan that is strong and credible. So we may get there, we may not," the official told reporters.

The United States and its European and Arab allies see no way ahead while power remains in Assad's hands.

Even as the diplomats gathered at the United Nations complex by the shores of Lake Geneva, the Syrian army rained mortar fire on pro-opposition areas in Deir al-Zor, Homs, Idlib and the outskirts of Damascus, activists said.

Government troops were fighting rebels of the Free Syria Army at several points. Syria's border with Turkey was also tense following a Turkish military build-up in response to Syria's shooting down of a Turkish warplane last week.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 16 people were killed on Saturday.

More than 10,000 people have been killed in the 16 months since the anti-Assad uprising broke out and the past few weeks and days have been amongst the bloodiest yet.

Arriving for the talks in Geneva, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said: "It has always been our view that a stable future for Syria, a stable political process means Assad leaving power as part of an agreement on transitional process".

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said nothing to reporters as he went in.

He and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Friday night but a U.S. official said differences with Moscow over the conflict remained.

"Our Western partners want themselves to decide the outcome of the political process in Syria although it is the job for the Syrians," Lavrov's Deputy Gennady Gatilov said prior to the Geneva meeting.

Clinton offered no further insights as she arrived for the talks, but Hague made clear he expected a day of hard bargaining.

"There is an opportunity for the international community to be much stronger and act more robustly but we can only do it with the agreement of Russia and China," he said.

The foreign ministers of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council - Russia, the United States, China, France and Britain - were attending Saturday's talks.

Turkey, Kuwait, Qatar, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby and European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton are also taking part.

Also present was Norwegian Major General Robert Mood, who headed a failed U.N. ceasefire monitoring mission to Syria and was witness to the violence and suffering on the ground.

However, Iran, Syria's closest regional ally, and Saudi Arabia, a foe of both Damascus and Tehran and leading backer of the rebel forces opposing Assad, are not represented. Nor is anyone from the Syrian government or opposition.

NATIONAL UNITY

The United States and its European and Arab allies see no way ahead while power remains in the hands of Assad.

According to a draft document from Annan, seen by Reuters, the envoy envisages the setting up a transitional government of national unity which can establish a neutral environment for political change. It would have full executive powers.

"It could include members of the present government and the opposition and other groups, but would exclude from government those whose continued presence and participation would undermine the credibility of the transition and jeopardize stability and reconciliation," it said.

That proposal is the stumbling block as it effectively means Assad cannot be involved. The Syrian opposition also demands that he is barred from any role.

The U.N.'s Ban, opening the closed-door meeting, underlined the need to reach an agreement "today" and his appeal was echoed by the Arab League's Elaraby, diplomats told Reuters.

The Syrian conflict has evolved from peaceful protests against the Assad family's four-decade rule to something akin to a civil war with a sectarian dimension.

Although the world has condemned the ferocity of Assad's forces' crackdown on the opposition, it has been unable to halt violence which threatens to draw in more of the region's religious and political rivalries and alliances.

Senior officials holding preparatory talks failed to overcome differences and Western diplomats said Russia was pressing for changes to Annan's text.

"It is absolutely essential that the violence stops and that a political transition can begin. Kofi Annan made reasonable propositions and I hope that they will be upheld and that's the point of today's discussions," French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, said as he arrived for the talks.

An Arab diplomat had said things were looking bad.

"If there is no agreement, Bashar al-Assad will know he had every possible opportunity to fly his planes and burn towns and the international community will do nothing," he said on Friday.

Russia and China have objected to what they see as Western interference which brought about the downfall of rulers like Libya's Muammar Gaddafi.

Western governments, however, have shown little will to repeat last year's Libyan experience of military support for rebels in Syria, where Assad's forces are formidable and the complexities of religion and ethnicity much greater.

Video posted on Saturday by activists in the eastern desert city of Deir al-Zor showed smoke rising from apartment blocks as explosions rang out, some shaking the camera. Activists also reported shelling in Homs, Idlib and the outskirts of Damascus.

State media agency SANA also reported an assault of the town of Douma, 15 km (9 miles) from Damascus, where activists say more than 50 people have been killed since Thursday.

"The authorities continued cracking down on armed terrorist groups and raiding the hideouts of terrorists in Douma, killing scores of terrorists and injuring and arresting big numbers," SANA said.

Although the government routinely refers to its enemies as "armed terrorist groups", Assad himself conceded this week that the country was now in a state of war.

China blocks Bloomberg News after unflattering coverage of future president

A new investigation into China's next president, Xi Jinping, reveals that his family has made a huge fortione. The Daily Telegraph said the report is "hugely damaging" because Chinese officials are forbidden from amassing significant wealth.

Bloomberg News first broke the story. The news organization found that the family of Xi Jinping, currently China's vice president, has invested in companies with total assets of $376 million.??People are angry because there?s unequal access to money- making," a China scholar told Bloomberg News. ?There?s no question in the Chinese public mind that this is wrong.?

More from GlobalPost: When the BRICs crumble

The Chinese government seems to be aware that the public would not be happy about the news. After the Bloomberg story came out, people in China were unable to access the Bloomberg website.?"Our Bloomberg.com website is currently inaccessible in China in reaction, we believe, to a Bloomberg News story that was published today," Belina Tan, head of corporate communications for the Asia-Pacific region, told the Guardian.?

Of course, it's not the first time that sensitive news stories have been blocked in China. The New York Times has had similar problems, BBC News reported, and YouTube, Google+, Twitter, Dropbox, Facebook and Foursquare are all banned in the nation.

Governments and oil companies slammed over Virunga exploration

Fauna & Flora International,?WWF, the Wildlife Conservation Society, the Frankfurt Zoological Society and the Lukuru Foundation have welcomed an announcement that condemns petroleum exploration in Virunga National Park, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The committee overseeing World Heritage Sites?have cautioned that petroleum exploration could cause serious harm and should be halted.

Expressing its concern over recent actions by petroleum companies, the World Heritage Committee reiterated its position that oil development is incompatible with World Heritage status. In the Committee?s decisions, passed at its annual meeting in St Petersburg yesterday, they also called on the Democratic Republic of the Congo to revoke permits granted to exploration companies.

British oil company SOCO International, which has already begun activities in Virunga, was criticised in the State of Conservation report on Virunga as being ?hostile to the park?. The committee said SOCO?s permits did not conform to DRC?s international commitments.

SOCO has announced plans to begin aerial surveys to map oil deposits, and reportedly landed a helicopter in the park earlier this month. Questions over authorisation for the landing allegedly led to an altercation between Congolese navy sailors, acting as security for SOCO, and Virunga park rangers. The incident resulted in the bayonet stabbing of a ranger, according to witnesses.

Residents have expressed concern over the possibility that pollution from SOCO exploration in Lake Edward could contaminate fishing waters where 30,000 residents make their livelihoods.

Total, the other oil company with a concession in the park, and SOCO were admonished by the committee for not joining other industry leaders in pledging to remain out of all World Heritage Sites. The Committee also called on the countries where the companies are headquartered to ?to ensure that petroleum and mining companies in their territory cause no damage the World Heritage properties.?

Virunga National Park was declared a World Heritage Site in 1979.? It is recognised for its unique landscapes and rare animals, including Critically Endangered mountain gorillas.

New technique controls graphite to graphene transition

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2012) ? University of Arkansas physicists have found a way to systematically study and control the transition of graphite, the "lead" found in pencils, to graphene, one of the strongest, lightest and most conductive materials known, an important step in the process of learning to use this material in modern day technology.

Peng Xu, Paul Thibado, Yurong Yang, Laurent Bellaiche and their colleagues report their findings in the journal Carbon.

Physicists at the University of Manchester first isolated graphene, a one atom thick sheet of carbon atoms, by using Scotch tape to lift only the top layer off of the other layers of graphite. Electrons moving through graphite have mass and encounter resistance, but electrons moving through graphene are massless and encounter almost no resistance, which makes graphene an excellent candidate material for future energy needs and for quantum computing for enormous calculations while using little energy.

However, graphene is a new material only discovered in 2004, and many things remain unknown about its properties.

"The transition from graphite to graphene can be random," said Xu. "Our idea was to control this."

The researchers used a new technique called electrostatic manipulation scanning tunneling microscopy to "lift" the top layer of graphite, creating graphene. Scientists have traditionally used scanning tunneling microscopy on a stationary surface, but this new technique uses a moving surface to move between graphite and grapheme.

"Not only can we make it happen, but we can control the process," Xu said.

Using this technique, the researchers can tell how much force it takes to create graphene and how much distance exists between graphene and the graphite as well as to track the total energy of the process.

How the electron acquires its mass is a fundamental topic and is related to particle physicists' hunt for the Higgs boson, a long-hypothesized elementary particle that has predicted properties, such as a lack of spin and electric charge, but that does not have a predicted value for mass. Being able to move electrons between a massive and massless state allows scientists to study this duality and how it works. The level of control the scientists have over the process will allow them to figure out possible ways to use graphene for advancing this understanding.

Xu and his colleagues are researchers in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.

Debt crisis: Shattered Cameron heads home as Euro leaders hammer out late-night agreement

  • Eurozone leaders work through the night to thrash out a deal
  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel forced into embarrassing U-turn after abandoning demands for tough reforms in exchange for bailout money
  • Leaders agree to lower borrowing costs of Italy and Spain
  • Italian newspapers cannot hide their glee with anti-Merkel front pages
  • Fears that Britain's financial industry might be left isolated after it was also agreed to create a single supervisory body for euro area banks

Angela Merkel finally gave ground over new measures to save the stricken euro following an extraordinary night of summit brinkmanship by Italy and Spain.

The German Chancellor reluctantly signed off a deal which will allow the eurozone?s ?600billion bailout fund to invest directly in Spain and Italy?s? crippled banks.

British sources last night insisted that no UK taxpayers? money would be involved in the deal, as David Cameron had already extricated us from any involvement in the bailout funds.

Stock markets across Europe rallied on the news, despite warnings that the complex deal may prove to be yet another ?sticking-plaster? solution.

Mrs Merkel faced an angry backlash in Germany where her previous reluctance to extend aid to the country?s profligate southern neighbours had proved popular with voters. The opposition SPD accused her of making a ?180-degree turn?.

?

The ?breakthrough? came after 14 hours of fractious talks during which Italy?s prime minister Mario Monti and his Spanish counterpart Mariano Rajoy threatened to block a ?100billion growth fund unless Mrs Merkel gave way.

In an extraordinary power play they were backed up by France?s new Socialist president, Francois Hollande.

ITALIAN PRESS GUN FOR ANGELA

The Italian media launched an extraordinary attack on Angela Merkel yesterday, as the country gloated about a ?double victory? over Germany.

One newspaper ran a front-page headline saying simply ?F*** Off Merkel?, while Il Giornale screamed: ?Bye bye lard a***?.

Vulgar: Italian newspapers Libero (left) and Il Giornale (right) today launched offensive, front page assaults on Angela Merkel following her demands, which were not met, for a stringent bailout deal

The Italian football team upset the form book to boot Germany out of the Euro 2012 championships on Thursday.

Within hours, at the Brussels summit on the future of the euro, Italy?s prime minister Mario Monti forced German chancellor Mrs Merkel to back down over her refusal to allow Europe?s bailout fund to help the continent?s struggling banks.

Mr Monti emerged from 14 hours of fractious talks to declare his country had achieved a ?double satisfaction? over Germany.

But the newspapers were far more blunt. Libero ran the headline ?F*** off Merkel?, with an image of star striker Mario Balotelli kicking a football bearing the German leader?s face.

The attacks continued on page two, with a report on the football match headed: ?Two kicks in the fat a***.?

Both publications support ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi; Il? Giornale is owned by the 75-year-old tycoon?s brother.

Giovanni Melandri, the Democratic Party?s culture spokesman, said: ?These attacks by the Berlusconi press on Mrs Merkel are? vulgar, churlish and disgusting.

?They?re also extremely misogynist.?

Mr Monti even threatened to keep the EU?s 27 leaders in Brussels until Sunday night unless a deal was struck.

Shortly after 4am, Mrs Merkel?s resistance finally crumbled.

In a symbol of the EU?s increasingly two-speed nature, the deal was thrashed out by the 17 eurozone leaders three hours after Mr Cameron and the heads of other non-euro countries had gone to bed.

The new initiative is designed to ease the pressure on Spain and Italy, which have seen their borrowing costs rise to unsustainable levels in recent months because of problems with their banks and debts.

In return, Mrs Merkel demanded agreement that all of the eurozone?s banks would come under the supervision of the European Central Bank in Frankfurt.

Mr Cameron yesterday claimed victory for forcing the EU to back down over plans to hand Brussels control over the regulation of ?all? European banks. The final deal covers only banks in the eurozone countries, leaving the supervision of British banks in London.

The new initiative was widely viewed as the first step on the road towards the creation of a powerful fiscal union.

EUROZONE LEADERS REACT

French President Francois Hollande

'It is very important that we put into motion procedures for immediate action - something that was much hoped for. Bank supervision for a recapitalisation of the banks will take a bit more time, but this will be a lasting move in the right direction.

'We defined a vision for the euro - for economic and monetary union - saying what we will do together, and there will be greater solidarity at each step in integration.'

German Chancellor Angela Merkel

'We have taken important decisions last night. I am very satisfied that we took good decisions on growth.'

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite

'We are heading for a future where we will need very general supervisory bodies to look more carefully, more strictly, and which are more responsible for the financial sector and banking sector, and that's where we are heading.

'I hope that in a very few weeks, the euro zone leaders will be able to find a concrete mechanism for how to control the not-very-well-behaving banks and to help them.'

European Council president Herman Van Rompuy said officials would now draw up a detailed plan for ?genuine economic and monetary union? within the Eurozone.

?The aim is to make the euro an irreversible project,? he said.

In a key concession by Germany, the leaders agreed to waive the bailout fund?s preferred creditor status on lending for Spanish banks, removing a key deterrent to investors buying Spanish government bonds, who feared having to take the first losses in any debt restructuring.

?We have taken decisions that were unthinkable just some months ago,? European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso said.

But the deal does not involve any new money and many questions remain about how it might work.
One British source said: ?They?ve kicked the can a bit further down the road this time, but there is still a lot to do.?

Marc Ostwald, market strategist at Monument Securities, said: ?While there may be some temporary sense of relief that the summit has not descended in to acrimonious discord, what has been thus far agreed is nothing more than sticking plaster.?

The deal also includes a pledge to re-examine the strict austerity measures imposed on Ireland as part of its bailout deal.

But the deal played badly in Germany where Mrs Merkel headed straight to Berlin in a bid to sell it to MPs.

Asked if she had yielded to pressure, she said: ?There is clearly pressure from financial markets. Some countries are in a difficult situation. The high interest rates affect the debt but also the real economy. We had an interest in finding solutions.?

But the influential German magazine Der Spiegel said Mrs Merkel had ?caved in on the most important points?.

The magazine accused the Chancellor of leading Germany into an unpopular ?debt union?, adding: ?The reactions at home were devastating; even the vote on the fiscal pact in parliament wobbled. Merkel?s advisers seemed surprised by the force of the attacks.?

The Sueddeutsche newspaper said Mrs Merkel?s compromises ?represent some of the biggest changes in the management of the European debt crisis since Greece received its first rescue package?.
